Inferno is the one that finally put me off the series for the next ten years or whatever - I worked at a video store when it came out, took it home before we put it on the shelf, and immediately returned it in the middle of the night; it made me mad as hell.

Going into the movie this time, I expected to mock it, but had a pleasant surprise - it's not awful. Sure it's not a Hellraiser movie, it's predictable as hell, and the ending is telegraphed from five minutes in. But the visuals were intriguing, the effects were impressive, and the acting was actually decent.

The problem with these straight-to-video ones is that (I think) only one of them was even written as a Hellraiser movie in the first place; usually they'll just take a script that's not going anywhere, often about a detective or whatever, and then throw in Pinhead for three minutes and slap him on the cover. Bam, Hellraiser 9!
Miramax are kinda whores. Just look what they did with something that had potential, like The Crow franchise.

Anyway, apparently Clive Barker has given the upcoming remake his blessing, so we'll just see how that goes... Rolling Eyes

It really, REALLY does. Good description.

I'd gladly take 10 more straight to video Hellraisers over a remake

As much as I deplore remakes in general, you might change your tune after seeing Revelations, the movie so bad that even Doug Bradley turned it down.

Seriously, I had to turn it off, and I sorta like some of these dtv ones.

I have to admit...I really love found footage. Especially the ones where they look for Bigfoot or some other Creature. I know most of them suck, but everytime I read something about a new one I have to check it out.

Why be ashamed? Everyone is allowed to like what they like, I don't judge. Even as I was typing my weird alliteration thing there (I had just woken up...not sure what that was about) I remembered that I liked Chronicle...then REC...then Blair Witch, even.

I'm told by reputable sources (well, Brad Jones, anyway) that I would hate V/H/S, but then I go and watch "The Bunny Perspective" thing about it, and he makes it look good. So...thinking about checking it out.

Personally, I like the concept of found footage, but I just think that at this point it has been overused by people that don't really get it, and are looking for an excuse to have their poorly made shaky cam bullshit be passed off as art. It hurts my soul a bit.

I do believe that the conceit, if used properly, could be brilliant. Just haven't seen it yet. In the meantime...

The major hurtle for my suspension of disbelief with found footage movies has always been the question of why the camera person keeps filming when shit is going down. Some movies handle this better than others. Plus shitty camera work. But I agree with Christonabun, the concept has the potential to be truly terrifying.

Some of the better ones I've seen:
Strawberry Estates
August Underground's Mordum
Alone With Her

Nowt heard of any of those, which, to be honest, gives me some modicum of hope.

I'm gonna check out all three, so thanks for that. Very Happy

I'll be honest - I cannot stand August Underground's Mordum. I've watched it and I didn't like it one bit.

I'm basically on the same page, but from a different angle. I don't wonder why things are being filmed (watch the news - this really does happen, and all too frequently) but rather I wonder how. Watch shit like "Cloverfield" and explain to me exactly HOW certain sequences were captured, because I don't get it.

I have trouble enjoying movies like this in the first place, because I'm foolishly trying to apply logic to something that is trying to be entertainment. But if your conceit is that what I'm watching is reality, well, every second I'm seeing on screen HAS to fit in to that mold. My brain won't accept it otherwise, and then it ruins your entire movie for me.

People continuing to film while people die all around them, I can buy. I've seen it in real life. But the second you show me an angle from where there shouldn't have been a camera, I'm done. This is why I enjoyed Chronicle as much as I did - the story was weak, the actors telling that story weren't even that great, but damnit, they went to some amazing lengths to make sure that everything we saw on screen had a reason to be there.

Does anyone have any opinions on the new Godzilla film coming in 2014? What you would like to see, what you expect it to be like?

This is the most recent news I've read on the project
http://www.filmofilia.com/u-s-godzilla-remake-to-film-in-march-126640/

Apparently it's to start filiming in March 2014 and Gareth Edwards (Monsters) is still set to direct. It's from the same production company that did Nolan's Batman films and David Goyer is working on the screenplay. It will probably be an enjoyable movie but it just won't feel right. There is a whole lot of cultural context that makes Godzilla work and all of that is lost when it's remade overseas.

Is it an American production? Because I'm not interested if it is.

Godzilla should be a small Japanese man in a suit, sorry.

What are some of you guy's favorite horror films? Here's a little list of some of my favorites, not in any order, just random ones I love...

Classic- (My Favorite Horror film-->)*Return of the Living Dead*, Romero 'Dead' series, Friday the 13th 6 Jason Lives, Halloween 1&4, Nightmare on Elm Street 2&3, Texas Chainsaw Massacre(1973), The Exorcist, and Poltergeist.

Modern- The Devil Inside, 28 Weeks Later(I actually like it better than 28 Days Later) Insidious, and Paranormal Activity 2(I know the series gets a lot of hate, but I actually enjoy them on a certain level).

Universal Monsters- I have all of the 'Universal Monsters Classic Collection' VHS and my favorites are- Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Frankenstein Meets the Wolman, The Wolfman, Creature From the Black Lagoon, The Monster and the Girl, Tower of London, and my favorite Universal film- The Invisible Man.

Kaiju Films- tho the technical term for Kaiju Films is "Japanese Giant Monster films", I'm just going to call any giant monster film a Kaiju film because it's faster than saying "Giant Monster Film".- Godzilla, Gamera vs. Guiron, Gamera the Invincible, Gamera, Godzilla vs. Mothra, Godzilla vs. Hedorah, Godzilla vs. Biollante, Ghidrah, the Three Headed Monster, Mothra, Rodan, Godzilla vs. The Astro Monster, and Cloverfield(I love the monster concept and the mystery of where it came from. If it wasn't from a camera perspective, then I would've loved it.)

I tried to organize the list a little. Those were just some of the Horror Films I love, epecially the Kaiju ones.

Derp! I got my modern exorcism found footage films mixed up! When I said "The Devil Inside", I meant "The Last Exorcism". I watched both and hated The Devil Inside. The Last Exorcism on another hand, I loved.

Will anyone ever get past the Horror genre? Seriously, old school classics like Dracula, The Mummy, Wolfman, etc. those are the only Horror movies I accept. Everything else just seems like the same regurgitated trash you see over and over and over. Am I missing something? What is the appeal?

It's just personal preference. Horror isn't for everybody. I'm pretty forgiving to a lot of films because I like the genre. That's almost like saying Elvis, Buddy Holly, and Chuck Berry are the only rock musicians you accept and everything else is just regurgitated trash. Genres evolve.

I still feel that there are original and creative horror films past the Universal and silent film era. Every decade has their own staple of the style of horror film in that decade. Like the 50's. So many of the horror/sci-fi movies from that decade were revolving around the nuclear holocaust fear that swept the nation. As the times changed the style of film changed. As time went on, the films got bloodier and more gruesome, but still usually kept to what was popular in the genre for that time. That's why there were so many slasher films in the 70's, 80's ,and further on.When a formula works, it gets reused. I don't feel it's the same regurgitated crap because the genre has definitely changed over time. It's just that sub-genres and ideas are usually re-used in the genre. That's why I love the horror genre so much. Because there are so many selections and ideas that wouldn't make sense in a normal drama or action film; but with horror/ sci-fi, any idea can work as a film. If you want a certain type of horror film- like a nuclear apocalypse, then you can find that in the horror/sci-fi genre because of how original it allows creators and directors to be.
