Well, I'm back from my self-imposed exile, ready to begin foaming at the mouth at all the stupid, scary people that govern us in the U.S. all over again.

Thought I'd start with a giggle, though. Between the editing and the music, this video seems to think we live in an epic movie trailer. It bothers me how utterly serious this guy is, but you just have to laugh...apparently flashing an image of an eagle and sneaking in Reagan quotes under the music is all it takes to impress a conservative these days.

Haven't been aware of anything ridiculous happening in US politics for nearly two weeks now...what the hell is happening?

The next person to utter the phrase "fiscal cliff" gets a kick in the dangly bits.

I lied, I'm taking a break from the news again. I find myself in a rather fragile emotional state this time of year, and I guess I'd rather be ignorant to what's going on in the world and nominally sane than up-to-date and suicidal.

I just can't do it, not right now. I need sunshine in my life, and these people are trying to kill me. Evil or Very Mad

That's what I do year round. The news makes me more upset and depressed than I usually am, and that's saying a lot given my usual mental state :-/

I know how you feel Kevin and Christonabun. People ask me sometimes why I don't pay attention to the news or the world as much. This is part of the reason why, my mental state is always affected by it.

This seems to be a uniquely North American problem (I understand Canada also has a problem with fearmongering in the media, though to a lesser degree). You don't hear about people being frightened of the news in other parts of the world.

I blame 24 hour news-cycles, for one thing. What a ridiculous idea! I still think there should be a segment after the nightly news called "And Now, Some GOOD News!" They'll show pictures of puppies and shit. Why? Because the world is just honestly not as dark as they are making it out to be. Hell, I'm scared to let my daughter walk around the block, when just 20 years ago I would ride my bike MILES and MILES away and just do whatever I wanted. You want to know what's changed since then? Not a whole lot, except the way things are reported now.

I like to be up on current events - I think it's important to know what is happening around us and not be blind to important events (I reccomend the BBC for this). But right now, I just can't deal. I'm depressed, I'm angry, and I need to step away for a minute.

Oh, but hey - welcome, Alessandro! Hope you stick around. Very Happy

No worries! Found the forums through the Mentalcast Smile

I studied Journalism in University (well Communications, but News is part of it) so I know all too well how the News sells itself on blood and guts. They think it's the only thing that interests people, when in reality they are forcing and telling people that blood and guts is what they like. The actual happy stuff (when they cover it) is treated as a "Soft" news story, as fluff and padding, as opposed to the real, "hard" news.

Yup, the BBC is a better news source, as are the independent ones you can find on the internet. I hardly ever watch the news here.
