Hello all!
I'm sort of new at this so don't judge too hard! Razz
I just wanted to start a topic on horror games, they're my favourite to play and I guess this is a general discussion about them!
Share your favourite horror games, opinions on games and all that jazz!
I'd love to hear anything!
So here's a starter question that could develop into more.
Thoughts on the new Resident Evil? Or what the Silent Hill series is turning into? ... pale

I'm still a last gen gamer, but I watched "Let's Plays" of both RE6 and Downpour and thought they looked...okay? I could go on for days about how this current crop of games seems to have missed the boat on atmosphere, tension, music, etc. You know, the things that make horror "horror?"

But yeah, horror games were always my bag, going back to the C64 days. I wish we'd get a new Fatal Frame, or SOMETHING! This should be a neat thread.

I think that's is what the thread is for so by all means go on for days!

Thinking of playing (the good/decent) Silent Hill games i haven't yet. I know some of the later ones suck. Sooo, what would be good suggestions on any of the Silent Hill after 4?

I'll get lambasted for this, but you might like the port of Origins to the PS2. It goes back to the gameplay mechanics and wonky camera angles of the first one, the story is "okay," and it still has that loverly Yamaoka score.
I like the main character Travis, though I've already forgotten what his whole deal is and why his monsters look like they do. One of my nitpicks is that there is no tension, however, because practically every item you come across can be used as a weapon, and he has a magic bag of holding shoved down his pants; I'm fairly sure I had a refrigerator in my inventory at one point.

I know how much you enjoyed the original, though, and this is the "official" prequel, showing how Alessa got burned, etc etc.

Haven't played it in years, but I remember enjoying it for what it was. Steer clear of Homecoming and Shattered Memories, both of which pissed me off...haven't played Downpour, but it looked honestly pretty neat.

Here's the first ten minutes if you want to get an idea of what you'd be in for.

well, i'm glad you didn't tell me what his whole ordeal is, cause that would ruin the game! Razz OK, so, need to know what other good ones to play - as i don't want to play whichever ones out of order if they tie in... Figure that ones safe since prequel to the first game.. But, playing through as someone named Travis, i won't be able but to think of him as Travis Crabtree from 80's Dan now lol. KEEP 'EM COMIN' PEEPS!

I seriously suggest Shattered Memories! A lot of people don't like it for the lack of combat but that's where the atmosphere really comes into effect.
And your actions throughout the game also effect the end.
And to note it also is sort of is a remake of the first game! It's pretty cool and Harry Mason is still amazing of course, I'd say give it a shot.
I've never played it on the Wii, only the PS2 but it's still great on there! Very Happy

I also played it on the PS2, which is part of why I hated it - that game was made for the Wii, and the controls are unforgivable.

I found it to just be another unnecessary retelling of the first story, which we've already had enough of. I will grant that it was novel by having NO combat, but I'll be honest, I eventually felt like a pansy running all the time, and I thought that wasn't very true to Harry Mason. I'm a single father too, and Harry originally kicked ass to find his girl; I didn't think it was very honest to have him running through the whole game.

Still, that could have worked, if the running mechanic itself were viable in any way. Another thing that could have been cool was the ghosts that Harry captures on his cell phone, but again I could barely navigate the menu. On PS2 though, so I didn't play it the way it was intended.

I believe this was the last one Yamaoka worked on, is that true? That's always a good thing.

I don't know, I didn't care for this one, but Downpour appears to have perfected the balance between the fleeing scenes and the battle system too.

And I wouldn't drop spoilers like Travis' motivation or anything Ms. J, but I was implying that apparently it wasn't very impressive...we all remember James, and Harry, and Heather, and Henry, but Travis?

No clue anymore, sorry. But I do remember there's a UFO ending. tongue

I'm a big fan of Amnesia: The Dark Descent for the PC. Should be fairly cheap over on Steam and GOG.com might have it as well if you don't like having things tied to a Steam Account. Creepy, very Lovecraftian, and, oh yeah, you can't actually fight the monster(s) so you'll be running away like a scared toddler when those things show up. Or hiding in dressers. Or just dying a horrible, insanity induced death.

2 of my favorite Horror games ( and some will debate me on that category) is from the Onimusha Series

they are both i guess more "Fantasy Horror" , but where Feudal Japan is concerned , it is just plain Horror
( Stories from the Feudal Era of Japan are kinda Crazy, or "fantastic" if you will) . The production was overlooked by Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami who seems to get top billing as an adviser for the series

Onimusha - Warlords

And ........this was the DIRECT sequel to that story , Onimusha 3 - Demon Siege ......(yea, i have no idea why 2 was a Tangent)
.oh, and this one has time travel..........with modern France..............

OH, and because I can be a bit of a completest sometimes with my posts, here are the links to buy both games on PC

( if only Capcom would play with GOG.com....Sigh)

Onimusha 3

and i can't seem to find a PC copy on Amazon for the 1st Onimusha on PC, even though i have one myself, but i'm sure you could find it....through "Other" Avenues

BUT if you have an XBOX1 ( or perhaps a 360) there is the very cool and Exclusive Genma Onimusha
And you can find it HERE! ( I have owned SEVERAL copies of that particular version)

I only ever played Onimusha 3, but it was fun.

I remember Sweet Home, was there a demo or playable version out there somewhere?

Aha - I believe I have it in an emu pack, then. I remember reading about it some time ago; for some reason I thought you were referring to something that hadn't been released.

I would love to play the build of RE4 before it became Devil May Cry.

I think this should be it's own game, as I liked Res.4 ( especially modded out on PC) but this looks pretty awesome too

so hear is the Prototype to Res 4...before it became the NORMAL Res 4 we all know

less sciencey biowarfare, and more paranormal craziness would have been sweet

For sure. As a old school RE fan who LOVES the early titles from 1 to Code veronica this still looks to have that feel stead of completely changing the style and feel like they did with 4. I would LOVE to play this it looks incredible it aso reminds me a lot of the RE Remake

Here's the Let's Play I've been watching of Fatal Frame 4, since it was never released here. I love this Lotus Prince dude - he's funny, and smart enough that even though this is his first play through of the game, he doesn't run around in circles pointlessly (very much).
Watching this particular game really puts me back in the 90's, playing scary games in a dark room with a friend or two in high school - very nostalgic. Surprised

And with this post, I've now completely taken over the "Last Posts" section on the main page. Seriously, someone else needs to start talking.
