Ok, for next Saturday's WTF, we're going to tackle this (in my opinion) abomination of a gaming system. There's been a vast amount of people that feel the same way. I know there's a lot of gamers that listen to the show, & if you've seen their presentation, or have read up on it we want to know what you think! Good or bad, let it rip! What features do you like? What do you NOT like about it? Also, are you planning on purchasing one, and why. Whatever you'd like to share, please do so! Very Happy

We'll be recording the episode Sunday (assuming no major events happen in the mean time that we then have to tackle & push this back to another week). I've got my knowledge and updates released ready to go, but PLEASE feel free to link any articles you've gone off of, in case perhaps it's one i haven't read.

I'm sure the core gamers, not the casual(the ios/facebook gamers) or 'casual'(as in mainly plays COD/FPS's and sport games) gamers, have seen the Xbox One conference or at least are aware of it. The fact that it has only been getting tons of negative press on the internet isn't changing the core gamers' minds. Things like no backwards compatibility, games are tied to one console unless you pay a fee, and a push towards the console being an Entertainment Center rather than a gaming console is not leaving a great first impression on just about anyone. Unless Microsoft shows off amazing games at E3 in June, I believe core gamers will be leaning towards the PS4 or get a gaming PC. I can't really predict what casuals are going getting, but it's clear that the audience that Microsoft is aiming to get is that 'casual' audience and catering to them with COD exclusives and things like the NFL partnership. The Xbox One will do alright in the casual and 'casual' gamer markets, but it's going to struggle to get the attention of the core gamer, unless Microsoft has an ace up their sleeve, like getting Rare, the guys who did Banjo Kazooie and Perfect Dark, to make proper games again, rather than more Kinect Sports titles. Aside from games, the other biggest factor is the price point, which will decide whether the mainstream audience will lean towards the PS4 or XB1, since they both are similar in terms of graphical capability.

The XBox 360 was the console that got me back into console gaming in 2007. I never picked up a PS3 or a Wii/WiiU - so as someone who has solely purchased 360 games (and even a second console when my original RRoD'ed out of warranty)... I won't be getting the XBox One.

The main "no go" thing for me has been the emphasis and, IMO, over-reliance on the Kinect. I didn't buy a Kinect for my 360 as it was something I wasn't interested in and that will not change with me for the next gen. Making it mandatory makes me less interested in your console.

Also, the lack of used gaming & rentals and/or paying a fee to do that (or however that is being spun this week) also is a major turn off to me. Not because I'm "cheap" like some of the Microsoft white knights have been accusing people of, but sometimes a demo isn't enough to convince me on purchasing a game for $60. Case in point, I wasn't sure I was going to like Fallout 3 as I loved the first two games in the series and this was a significantly different game in the series. One of my friends insisted I try it and let me borrow his copy. I liked it so much that I went out the next day and bought my own copy at full price. I later bought all of the DLC add ons and it led me to doing the same with New Vegas. But, you know, if I was cock-blocked by DRM or had to pay $20 or whatever to give my friend's copy a whirl, I probably wouldn't have bothered giving it a chance.

And, I don't care enough about routing my cable TV through a game console - or whatever it is they're planning where they had to say "TV" 300 times in the launch presenation - to even entertain picking up the console based on that.

The one thing the XBox One announcement DID do for me is cause me to pull my N64, GameCube, PS2 and Dreamcast out of storage and I'm strongly considering investing my "video game money" in 2014 into picking up copies of games for my retro systems. Or potentially picking up a PS3 + games on the cheap and just bypass the "XBox One / PS4" generation of gaming entirely.

Also, I think the name is pretty lame. The day of the reveal I kept wondering why people on my Facebook feed were talking about the first XBox console.

If the Playstation 4 goes over positively, Sony will dominate this generation of gaming.
Everything about this console pissed me off and made me loose what respect I had left for Microsoft. These are what they are ...

1. The Name- I don't know why they thought Xbox One would sound good but I think everyone is in agreement that the name of this console is one of the dumbest names for a game system ever.

2. The Design- The design for the new system is so bland and unimaginative that it might as well be a standard VHS player. I'm not asking for some over-the-top design, but at least give it a unique look that people can associate with it, like the PS3 or previous Xbox 360. Upcoming show: XBOX One - We want to know what you think! S223-1280-main-drUpcoming show: XBOX One - We want to know what you think! Xbox-One-console-21

3. EVERYTHING ELSE- Where do I start? For one, no backward compatibility with 360 games. Why? Most likely greed. "We can't make more money if they are able to use the games they already own on a previous console." Also, no used games. Microsoft is shooting itself in the head with this. It just greed, plain and simple. And finally, the fact that this new GAME CONSOLE is trying to do everything other than be a God Damn game console. They're basically jingling their shiny keys in front of us and saying "Ooh look at this and buy it you sheep! Yeah, we got fantasy sports and mandatory Kinect! Speech controlled television, yeah you like that don't you? Aw yeah, just look at that Skype! Yeah, you're totally going to buy this!"

I'm not going to buy this monstrosity and I hope no one else does either. Hopefully the sales for this will crash and burn and Microsoft will learn from their mistakes. But I can only hope ...

Quit bitching about backwards compatibility. The 360, much like the PS3, Wii, and Wii U, is PowerPC based. The X-Box One and PS4 are x86 based. They are not capable of being backwards compatible. The way the 360 was compatible with SOME Xbox games were due to a software compatibility layer. The PS3 had a PS2 built into it's original models to handle the backwards comparability. The PS4 and X-Box One are not powerful enough to do translations and emulation via software for their predecessors and to integrate a hardware solution would be costly. Also: QUIT YOUR BITCHING!!!

Seriously, you spoiled brats. Up until the LAST GENERATION we had NO BACKWARDS COMPATABLITY outside of few Atari's back in the 80's. You couldn't play an NES game in an SNES or N64. You couldn't play Master System game in a Genesis without an adapter, but you could play neither on a Saturn or Dreamcast. The only console that maintained SOME backwards compatibility, even for a limited time, was the Playstation since inception.

You have a 360? Keep using it. You have a PS3? Keep using it. Guess what? I still have an NES, SNES, N64, Genesis, and a SegaCD despite the fact I can play those games on a Virtual Console or though emulation. To bitch about a feature that is EXPENSIVE and needless is pointless.

It has NOTHING to do with greed. Has to do with cost cutting. When Sony took the "Emotion Engine" out of the PS3 it dropped in price. You don't want to pay $600 for a console again do you? I thought not.

It's that there is SO much wrong about this system. Not sure if you were directing that thinking my post is only about that issue, or just replying to the previous person. But I shall not go into everything here, as i will be discussing it all on the show. Smile

I agree with Mistress J, backwards compatibility is definitely one thing I DON'T care about. The emulation on the 360 of original XBox games was pretty piss poor so it's an all together more pleasant experience to just play them on my original XBox anyway.

Personally, this last console generation is what got me out of Console gaming, and this new generation of consoles seals that.

First off , the backwards compatibility issue IS a consideration for some people, and whatever microsofts excuse is for not having it , it sounds like bullshit, because PC emulators don't seem to have those same problems (even with very advanced console emulation), plus, they really just want you to keep re-buying the same shit. If programmers can make a WII emulator for PC that runs games better than a WII itself, all for free, then what the fuck excuse does Microsoft really have, I thought they are supposed to be cutting edge and wanting to give you a big media experience in ONE machine?? yea, I'll call bullshit on that.

2nd, not everyone has the ability to always have a connection, especially in this economy , where you might shut off the net for a month to make bills, or you might not be home enough to want a connection in the first place. Or what about military, or anyone who lives in a remote area? I get that Microsoft is playing on certain demographics, but do those demographics even think about what happens if the network is down? because if it goes down for more than a single day, you own a very expensive brick.

3rd. if you don't think used games are an issue, you are a snob who probably buys shit simply because it's new. It is a way that some people live by, because they can't afford to throw out 60 bucks when a game comes out. It is a dealbreaker for most people, if you don't have that option, you don't get those costumers.

I almost want to go off on a big rant about the Kennect, and how it is always on...watching you...... and that brings up serious privacy issues, but I will hold back on that.....

all in all, Microsoft has been hammering nails in the coffin, and the only people who will buy this shit brick are people who are either super microsoft fanboys, or people who can't think for themselves, enjoy servitude, and buy whatever products they are told like a good consumer.

Microsoft finally came out with a statement about their Xbox One policies.
http://news.xbox.com/2013/06/main

Here are some of the standouts

Share access to your games with everyone inside your home: Your friends and family, your guests and acquaintances get unlimited access to all of your games. Anyone can play your games on your console--regardless of whether you are logged in or their relationship to you.
(Oh wait, this isn't a new feature)

Give your family access to your entire games library anytime, anywhere: Xbox One will enable new forms of access for families. Up to ten members of your family can log in and play from your shared games library on any Xbox One. Just like today, a family member can play your copy of Forza Motorsport at a friend’s house. Only now, they will see not just Forza, but all of your shared games. You can always play your games, and any one of your family members can be playing from your shared library at a given time.

Trade-in and resell your disc-based games: Today, some gamers choose to sell their old disc-based games back for cash and credit. We designed Xbox One so game publishers can enable you to trade in your games at participating retailers. Microsoft does not charge a platform fee to retailers, publishers, or consumers for enabling transfer of these games.
(So places like Gamestop and Best Buy will still the places for trade ins. But smaller game shops and sites like eBay will have a much trickier time)

Give your games to friends: Xbox One is designed so game publishers can enable you to give your disc-based games to your friends. There are no fees charged as part of these transfers. There are two requirements: you can only give them to people who have been on your friends list for at least 30 days and each game can only be given once.

Loaning or renting games won’t be available at launch, but we are exploring the possibilities with our partners.
(It's still very annoying. And if I, for whatever reason a Xbox One [which isn't likely], I can't lend games to anyone. Not like there will be people to lend the game to though)

This isn't exactly correct now. New information has been released concerning the whole "friends coming over to play games on your console"... will be discussing on the show. Just wanted to give you a heads up on this not being the case now. As with most other things on this system, they keep going back and forth on things, and trying to "fix" issues that have had lash outs from gamers, but they're only "fixing" them by incorporating them mildly by putting immense restraints upon them.
