Getting back into comics for the first time in 20 years. Please help.

The title does not lie, folks. I was only about 8 years old when the story arc of Superman's death had finished its course and by then I had sworn off anything "new" at that time in favor of smaller, more random obscure series from the '80s regardless of quality, duration, and so forth. Outside of some passing interest in graphic novels over the years, I have absolutely zero knowledge of what's transpired in the industry since that's taken place and if that event was really as monumental and transcendent as my young mind had interpreted it at that time. The only exception to that was the Onslaught storyline and even then, I only remember having cursory knowledge of it. I know I've been missing out for better or worse, but where should I start over from? When? What to make of these seemingly endless crossovers and reboots I've heard about from those of you truly in the know?

Anything that provides at least a singular starting point would be very welcomed. Thanks, Juicers.
