PostSubject: The banning of unpleasant words...   Sun Jan 06, 2013 10:28 am

Hey there,

I'm a long time Josh Hadley listener, we even exchanged a few mails over the time, and I enjoy the shows. They give a good perspective on things so... keep up the good work!

Anyway...! It starts in germany now too. You had this topic on WTF and I thought it would be interesting to keep you uptodate. Yesterday I stumbled over an article on welt.de that said they are on their way to ban certain words from our children stories/books too. Specifically words that became very unpleasant, describing a certain ethnicity. I'm with every single comment, that was posted beneath said article, and position myself against changing these books. The books simply are a mirror of the time they're written in and should be left alone.

Regards

What words are going to be banned in regards to ethnicity? I mean, if they're banning the use of the word nigger than I don't care; more power to them. So can you list some examples?

Here it's less about the word than the characters simply having darker skin tones. Now they want to scratch these characters completely and replace them with something less controversial. If there were descriptions of characters (without any negative undertones btw), that use words that NOW suddenly are labeled 'offensive'... they want to change/replace these characters.

I don't like where all this forced political correctness is going.

I guess what's political correct and what isn't strongly depends on context. And most of these people in charge don't seem to care checking this context.

Ah, well, that's really lame and just plain stupid.

Being coined "controversial" based on skin tone is completely inhumane. I can't even gather why someone would want to do that. It's fucking racist, IMO.

Exactly... and being racist is what they're trying to avoid with actions like this. It's a little paradox.
